The expert watchmakers at IWC Schaffhausen have released a Big Pilot that reveals an innovative shock absorber system.
IWC Schaffhausen’s (iwc.com) newest family member, the Big Pilot’s Watch Shock Absorber XPL, elevates the watch game and sets a spectacularly high bar for the future of watch technology. For over 150 years, IWC Schaffhausen has maintained its sterling reputation by applying advanced technology to watches designed for aviation. Once an essential tool used for navigation, IWC’s newest pilot watch brings something notable to the table: the debut of the brand’s patented new shock absorber system.
“Ever since F.A. Jones founded IWC, engineering and innovation have been at the core of our DNA,” says Christoph Grainger-Herr, CEO of IWC Schaffhausen. “Today, we continue this heritage with our new engineering division, IWC Experimental, which drives cutting-edge developments in areas like advanced materials or g-protection. The Big Pilot’s Watch Shock Absorber XPL is the first brainchild of this division.”

The XPL in the name stands for “experimental,” as this watch’s design defies all pilot watch norms. Light on the wrist with enormous durability, its bulk metallic glass (BMG) and aluminum alloy from aerospace help protect the watch against the g-forces generated by impact during flight. The case easily deflects massive hits; the shock absorbers cushion the interior movement, allowing it to survive shocks over 30,000 g.

The Big Pilot’s shape is modified with a case made in a proprietary titanium alloy called Ceratanium, a stealth surface treatment paired with an all-black dial, and a black rubber strap with a leather inlay. Says Grainger-Herr, “Every detail has been carefully analyzed and improved to redefine movement shock protection for mechanical watches.” The unique design of the Big Pilot’s Watch Shock Absorber XPL proves that meticulously crafted technology can reveal endless possibilities for the evolution of flight time.
